Collective effects of stellar winds and unidentified gamma-ray sources

چکیده
We study collective wind configurations produced by a number of massive stars, and obtain densities and expansion velocities of the stellar wind gas that is to be target, in this model, of hadronic interactions. We study the expected γ-ray emission from these regions, considering in an approximate way the effect of cosmic ray modulation. We compute secondary particle production (electrons from knock-on interactions and electrons and positrons from charged pion decay), and solve the loss equation with ionization, synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, inverse Compton, and expansion losses. We provide examples where configurations can produce sources for GLAST satellite, and the MAGIC, HESS, or VERITAS telescopes in non-uniform ways, i.e., with or without the corresponding counterparts. We show that in all cases we studied no EGRET source is expected.

Variable Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources near the Galactic Plane
In a recent paper, Romero et al. (1999) have presented the results of a positional correlation analysis of the low-latitude unidentified gamma-ray sources in the Third EGRET catalog with complete lists of galactic objects like supernova remnants, early type stars with strong stellar winds, and OB associations (considered as pulsar tracers). We have now carried out a study of those 42 sources at...
متن کاملLow-latitude Gamma-ray Sources: Correlations and Variability
A review of the main characteristics of low-latitude sources in the third EGRET catalog is presented. There are 75 unidentified gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET at |b| < 10◦. About a half of these sources are spatially correlated with potential galactic gamma-ray emitters such as supernova remnants, OB associations and early-type stars with very strong stellar winds. The other half is formed...
متن کاملSignatures of hadronic cosmic rays in starbursts? High-energy photons and neutrinos from NGC253
We show that it appears possible for starburst galaxies, like the nearby NGC 253, recently identified as a TeV source by the CANGAROO collaboration, to emit a significant amount of high-energy γ-rays and neutrinos through hadronic processes in their cores. We suggest that proton illumination of the inner winds of massive stars can be a viable mechanism for producing TeV γ-rays and neutrinos wit...
متن کاملGamma rays from colliding winds of massive stars
Colliding winds of massive binaries have long been considered as potential sites of non-thermal highenergy photon production. This is motivated by the detection of non-thermal spectra in the radio band, as well as by correlation studies of yet unidentified EGRET γray sources with source populations appearing in star formation regions. This work re-considers the basic radiative processes and its...
متن کاملAnalytic formulae for hadronic production in a single stellar wind
We present an approximate, analytical formulae for the computation of hadronically-produced gamma-ray luminosity in the innermost regions of stellar winds. We put this into the context of other recent research on regions of star formation as gamma-ray sources.
